So cakes have been something I've been slacking on doing research for.  Why, I don't know!  Maybe because it's frustrating to be sitting at my computer and not eating it?!  Anyway, with my June trip home fast approaching I need to start scheduling and taking care of things to get done while I'm there.  One being cake tastings and deciding on a vendor, so the research began.

Via the knot, I did some research and emailed the following companies: Hokulani Bake Shop, Cake Lava, Cake Works, Aloha Cakery, Tiers Of Joy, A Cake Life, Panya & Paradise Pastries.  To my surprise, just about every company responded within a day!

Hokulani gave me some pricing info, but didn't offer any consultation or tastings.  They just suggested I stop by Restaurant Row to try flavors that I like... I probably won't go with them.

Cake Lava replied saying they have a $500 minimum order which excludes delivery, tax and flavor charges.  This was the first one that responded with a price and I shouldn't be surprised at this point on how much things cost, but I'm like dang!  Hundreds of dollars for a cake... I hope everyone eats it!  (Which led me to another idea that I'll share later)  Today I went on their website and they make the most detail oriented, extensive cakes ever!  I really wish I could add some pictures to my post today, but all the websites don't allow you to do so.  Shucks.  Here is the link to their website though, check out the gallery photos if you are bored.  It reminds me of the cakes on ace of cakes (which I used to watch sometimes with Taryn & Noelle when they were my roomies). They are very talented, but not really my "style"... so not sure if I will end up going with them or not, we'll see... www.cakelava.com

Cake works emailed me back saying they do free tastings and consultations daily, so I definitely plan on hitting that up when I go home.  After visiting their photo gallery, I think it's more my taste, appearance wise.  I also visited the specialty cakes gallery, and loved the "manolo blahnik cake", the "burberry purse cake" and the "louis vuitton luggage cake".  Man those things are cool!  www.cakeworkshi.com

Tiers of Joy said I would probably need a 5 tier cake, ranging from $650-$750 as a base.  Their website is all pink which obviously I like.  They also had cakes similar to cake works and more my style.  I wonder how I'm going to choose?!

A Cake Life also said they could do cake tastings M-Th 10 am - 5 pm.  Their prices seemed a bit lower, but did mention a  $70 fee for delivery to Lanikuhonua.  There, they discuss cake designs and do a tasting of 5-6 flavors.  I definitely plan on doing that.  She suggested that I get a smaller cake and then serve sheet cakes in the back or mini cupcakes, which I think is a great idea!  The funny thing is that this was Sean's idea- KIND OF.  Sean actually (jokingly or not, I'm not sure) said we should get a fake cake to "cut" together then have Costco cakes in the back!  Of course I screamed "no way!" but in the end, that's the thought process.  I really loved their "Cakefolio" of pictures... The "Wedding Cupcakes" wiht a cake on top and cupcakes on bottom definitely sparked some thoughts in my brain, and I loved the "designer purse", "engagement cake", "chanel purse", "twilight" and "cookie monster".  Someone is very, very creative and talented.  One of my best friends from college, Tiffany Lawson, has started taking cake making classes with her best friend Kristen Hamamoto.  I've been looking at the cakes they are creating in class and am in awe!  So awesome!  I'm just waiting for them to offer to do my cake ;-) just kidding!!!

So that's what I've got so far!

I'm leaning towards doing a medium sized cake (Kendra says you are supposed to account for 75% of your guests when you order your cake) with a sheet cake in the back or cupcakes.  But I also am thinking of a dessert bar too!  I think it would be fun...maybe showcasing our favorite treats... which of course will include mochi and other yummy sweets.    Ok, now I'm craving something sweet....

On another note, my good friend  Jennifer Inouye was nice enough to visit fabric mart for me this past weekend to try and find my lime green palaka.  Unfortunately we are out of luck.  I don't know what to do!  I need to get a move on this!
